New York City is full of life surrounded by death, a metropolis of mausoleums and memorials, with ancient burial grounds tucked between apartment buildings and rural cemeteries with classic works of architecture. Krombie surveys the ways in which city dwellers interact with those who have passed. This is not a depressing read but really a guide to how memory and reverence are interpreted (and sometimes ignored) in a thriving cityscape — from regal tombs in the Bronx to forgotten Black burial grounds in Staten Island. (For just a 190 page book, Death in New York is generously packed with information.)

Captivating Read About a Topic Often Ignored

If you are anything like me and have a morbid fascination with the macabre, but also seek deeper understanding and respect not just for different treatments/cultural views surrounding death, but also your own personal relationship to it (or, should I more appropriately say, life) -- then this is the book for you. I read it on a Kindle and thought the author did an excellent job of maintaining respect and sensitivity (but nowhere near in the pejorative sense). I personally would consider this a must-read for any New Yorker, but really anyone would value from the author's careful and nuanced treatment of a topic that many of us do our best to bury our heads in the sand for. When you're up for it, and ever so timely given current events...this is a truly excellent read!

Fascinating

Death In New York is full of surprises -- things I'd never imagined could possibly be related to this topic. The author's incredibly thorough research led to my discovering new facets and history of places I thought I knew pretty well, plus all kinds of sites I'd never noticed that have amazing back stories. Her curiosity and quirky sense of humor make for very lively reading.
It seems weird to call a book about death and burial fascinating and illuminating, but that's how I found it to be. Extremely lively, offbeat, and interesting.

Enlightening read

This book was a real eye-opener for me. It talks in depth about an important issue that, as this book makes clear, doesn't get nearly enough attention. That being said, the author writes with a rollicking style peppered with humor throughout, so what could have been a grim subject is instead brought to life and this was all in all an entertaining as well as informative read. I would highly recommend, not just to New Yorkers, but to anyone interested in how death has been and is handled in one of the most important and emblematic cities in the world. This affects us all.

Required reading

For a NYC taphophile like myself, this is required reading. If you have a general interest in New York City this will also be a great read.
